Radon Mitigation in Milwaukee County

When Milwaukee County was formed back in 1835, the word, radon was not known. Nobody knew anything about gases that could enter into a home through the foundation. The county of Milwaukee was actually a part of Michigan territory. Milwaukee County back then was rugged and inhabited by Native American tribes. A toxic gas poisoning people in their homes was decades away from the minds of French Priests and traders who began to inhabit the area in 1674. The word “Milwaukee” was named from a Native American wording term to mean “good land.”

Now the county of Milwaukee is active with commercial and residential living spaces. The unfortunate reality is that in our homes, can reside a killer. The killer known as "Radon". Radon kills people through lung cancer. If our homes contain too much radon, we can end up breathing these particles into our lungs. Radon is the second cause of lung cancer in the United States. EPA suggests everyone test for this indoor gas. Radon Gas is measured in picocuries or 𝑝𝐶𝑖/𝐿. The EPA action level is 4 pCi/L. If your home's measurement is above this number. EPA recommends remediation. This means action should be taken throughout the county to reduce levels.

Signs of Elevated Radon

In actual fact, there are no real observable signs that radon toxins exist in a Milwaukee home. You cannot smell it, taste it or see it. The only real way to identify this gas is by testing. If a home is tested and levels are elevated, a mitigation contractor is then contacted. The remediation contractor will access the type of home and select a good location to install the radon system. Testing will then be performed again, to make sure that readings are reduced.

After radon levels are reduced, it is a good idea to test the home every two years, just to make sure that radon is still low.  If the homeowner decides to remodel or switch out their sump pump, the radon mitigation system could be interfered with. It is so important that the radon abatement system remains untouched. If the radon system has been dismantled, it is important to contact the radon mitigation contractor to re-install the system.

The United States Census declares Milwaukee's square miles to be approximately 96.80 square miles.
