To put it bluntly, Radon Kills! Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that occurs in Wisconsin homes.

Studies reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that the second leading lung cancer cause is radon exposure. The fact is that radon is responsible for at least 15% of lung cancer fatalities. On a better note, there is cause for hope in that consumer awareness has led to greater knowledge regarding the action necessary to take when determining if radon effects their families.

Awareness as to whether or not radon levels are too high in the home is the key to good indoor heath. Radon testing is the first step in determining what that level is.

A radon test is done in the home under closed conditions. This means the home should stay tight and not open to the air outdoors. A radon test measures samples of air within the indoor air of the home.

After the test is complete, usually about 48 hours, the data is analysed and an average reading will be given with the data retrieved. If the samples are lower than 4.0, the EPA suggests no immediate action may be taken. If levels are above 4.0, the EPA suggests obtaining radon mitigation. A radon mitigation system will eliminate much of the radon problem in the home. It is impossible to rid the home of all radon, but most radon mitigation contractors can evacuate most of it.

Is Radon in the Neighborhood?

A good way to get an idea of whether or not radon is in the neighborhood is to ask your neighbors. Start with the neighbors on your street. Perhaps many of them have already tested. If so, ask if they would kindly share their results. Although this can give clues about the existance of radon in the neighborhood, EPA still recommends testing for radon youself. You need to know for sure in order to protect yourself and your family against radon-induced lung cancer. Be safe!
